Jimmy Garoppolo or Tony Romo? Only 1 is worth an NFL trade

Jimmy Garoppolo and Tony Romo always will be connected as the collective pride of Eastern Illinois. This offseason, they also represent two potential trade targets for every NFL team desperate for a quarterback in 2017.

But whether that team is a contender, a rebuilder or part of the muddled middle, one thing is clear: Garoppolo is the better answer.

Garoppolo, the Patriots' top backup behind the never-retiring Tom Brady, appears to be the more unknown quantity. But that's assuming a lot about Romo, the honorably discharged Cowboys starter who will turn 37 before the draft.

For now, the asking price for Garoppolo and Romo is about the same: a second-round pick in return. New England and Dallas both wield that kind of power in a seller's market. The draft doesn't offer surefire solutions off the top, and the only attractive free agent to be, Kirk Cousins, likely will be re-signed by Washington in some form.

It's hard to imagine the Patriots or Cowboys wanting to keep Garoppolo or Romo as a luxury No. 2 for another season. The market is too good not to flip a QB.

So what would you rather have: a 25-year-old hot property out of a winning neighborhood, or an old fixer upper who looms as a money pit?

Romo has a terrific resume, and contrary to popular belief, what he has done to help the Cowboys win over the years should put him in the Canton conversation someday. The emergence of Dak Prescott created only a greater appreciation for how good Romo has been in Dallas.

But to give away such a high pick and also cater to Romo's high salary, you better be sure he can still deliver at that level. With Romo's recent history of back issues, collarbone injuries and consistent wear and tear, there's no guarantee, like this past preseason, that will he last long in his next chance on the field.

Sure, the standard has been changed with QBs playing well into their 30s, thanks to Brady and Drew Brees. Eli Manning and Philip Rivers will be around for a while longer, too. But those are iron men who've stayed either in incredible shape or have an uncanny ability to let the hits roll right off them.
